Cut the middleman

Bonjour, this is Cyril from Work Smarter: Live Better. In this video, I want to share one simple suggestion about how you think about your priorities.

I work with many leaders and their teams in large companies. All of these companies have detailed long-term strategic plans. But many people fail to make the link between these plans and what they are doing on a daily basis.

My suggestion: cut out the middleman and focus each individual on a quarterly plan.

The middleman is the yearly plan. I might be slightly extreme in suggesting to cut out the yearly plan, but if you have to focus on something, don’t focus too much on the yearly plan. Focus on the quarterly one. Every quarter ask each person of your team to answer a simple question:

What are the two or three things that if I focus on and do really well over the next quarter would have a significant impact on my performance and the performance of the business?

In other words: ‘I understand where the company is going long term, what does that mean for me next quarter?’.

I suggest you book 20mn before the start of every quarter in your diary to answer this question. And if you are a manager, organize a meeting with your team to discuss it.

If this is an area which could benefit you and your team, let me know. Very happy to discuss if and how I can help.

Have a wonderful day.

A bientôt

Cyril
