Bonjour. In this video, I would like to share one simple advice that can help you focus.
Today I am in New York. You may be able to see Manhattan behind me. It’s a beautiful sunny day with clear blue sky. I think New York is magical place no matter what time of day it is. When you wander outside there is always something going on and the streets are always full of noise and activity. It actually reminds me of some of the offices I see.
I am in a short break working with a leadership team. We have just had an interesting discussion on focus, and how it is so vitally important to create deep focus when we work. We spoke about quite a few tactics to enhance our ability to focus. One of the participants shared a simple trick that really helps him to focus and that is, music.
What do I mean by music?
Focus is a problem I see very often. Many businesses have moved from having offices to having an open plan environment which makes it very challenging for people to concentrate. The working environment is usually noisy and full of distractions. Moreover, people interrupt each other very frequently.
A few lucky people still have an office, but not many. Some people manage to isolate themselves in a quiet room from time to time, or work from home occasionally, but for most people their desk is where they do most of their work, and it can be quite challenging to do deep work.
As previously mentioned, one suggestion is to listen to music. Now it doesn’t work for everyone, and it doesn’t work with any kind of music. However, for some people putting their headphones on and listening to calm music does really help them. I personally do it and regularly listen to a playlist on Spotify called ‘Deep Focus’. It’s a list of quiet songs with no words. From time to time I put on my noise cancelling headphones and listen to this playlist.
