On my own when the sharks came

I’m in the middle of the Great Barrier Reef, and I’ve just shot this beautiful fish called a coral trout. I look up and search for my buddy — he’s drifted away. I look for the boat — it’s drifted too. And that’s when the sharks decided to come.

In this video, I want to share a simple trick to increase both your impact and your joy.

I’m currently in Cairns, after spending an incredible week on a spearfishing charter run by Matt — an expert guide who takes groups to some of the most remote parts of Northern Australia.

This trip has been next level. The places he’s taken us, the knowledge of where to go, the advice — it’s been absolutely sensational. And yes, there are lots of sharks out there. Thankfully, the boat finally turned up, and I’m still here — two legs, two arms, and a coral trout in the cooler.

Matt has been guiding these epic trips for years. He’s got hours of jaw-dropping footage — sharks up to 4 metres long, tuna as big as 65kg — the kind of content that could light up a YouTube channel. Check some of his epic photos on www.mbpspearfishingcharters.com.au

So I asked him, “Why don’t you have a proper channel to share this stuff?” His answer? He does have a channel… but it’s very mediocre. Plus he just doesn’t like editing. Sitting in front of a computer just isn’t for him. He can film all day, but editing? A hard pass.

And I get it. His genius is in the water — planning the trip, guiding, filming the experience. But afterwards, it becomes a chore.

It’s exactly the same for me with these videos. I love creating them… but formatting, editing, transcribing? I’ll procrastinate every time.

I see this with so many of my clients.

Last week, I ran a session called Amplify Your Genius, where we talked about exactly this: Do the things you’re brilliant at — the stuff that lights you up — and delegate the rest.

When you stay in your genius zone, that’s when you feel most alive and deliver the most impact.

If there’s something you really want to do — like Matt, sharing your amazing video content — but you keep putting it off, here’s what I suggested:

1. Design

Sit down and spend 15 minutes mapping out the process. Nothing fancy.

Here’s what mine looks like for these videos:

  • Write the script
  • Film the video
  • Format the video
  • Turn it into a blog
  • Add images
  • Check and publish on LinkedIn, via email, and on the website

Simple, clear steps. That’s the design.

2. Delegate

This is the game-changer. You don’t need a big team — just people who love doing what you don’t. I work with two amazing VAs:

  • Jilord (my full-time VA in the Philippines) formats every video and manages publishing.
  • Kara (another VA) uses AI to turn it into a transcript and then a blog, and then adds images.

And no, it’s not just because I’ve got “a team.” You can find brilliant people on Fiverr, Upwork, or other platforms who love this kind of work — and do it better than we ever could.

3. Improve

Once the process is running, you can tweak it. I adjust my video and blog style every few weeks — new visuals, clearer messaging — but I get to stay focused on the part I enjoy: creating and sharing ideas.

So, my question to you is: Are you procrastinating on great ideas that could create real impact — and bring you real joy — simply because the stuff around it isn’t your genius?

Because if so, the answer is not to push harder. The answer is to do more of what you love — and delegate the rest.

We just had an unbelievable week out here. I shot my first Spanish mackerel. The group was awesome and I’m already dreaming of the next trip (to be negotiated with my lovely wife, of course). But this isn’t just a fishing story — it’s a reminder:

“The work that lights you up — that creates joy, and momentum, and impact — that’s the work you’re meant to be doing.”

Everything else?

Someone else can do it, and do it better.

This is this week’s Work Smarter: Live Better tip.

Take care and hope you have a lovely day!

A bientôt,

Cyril
