Regularity trumps intensity

How many people book a gym membership, go a few times, and then  give up…?

One study found that around 67% of gym members fall into this category. I don’t know if it’s really 67% but it is a significant number of people.

Often people continue paying for their gym membership for a period of time despite them not going. 

This trend is particularly common among those who sign up at the beginning of the year with the intention of making exercise a regular habit. However, many individuals struggle to stay motivated and consistent with their gym routine, leading them to eventually give up on their fitness goals.

In this video, I want to discuss how regularity is more important than intensity when it comes to changing your habits.

Many people set themselves up for failure by starting off too strong and then losing motivation. The issue is that motivation is the least reliable factor when you are wanting to build a new habit. One day you are super motivated, but the next day you are not, and you don’t do it. It’s just too hard.

Instead, it’s better to start with small, achievable goals that you can do regularly. 

For example, if you want to start exercising, don’t go too crazy and commit to going to the gym every day for an hour. Instead, start with something simple like exercising for 5–10-minutes, two times a week. The important thing is to do it regularly and get those little wins, rather than focusing on intensity.

The same applies to other habits, such as meditation. Instead of committing to meditating for 20 minutes every day and burning out, I started with just three minutes, 2-3 times a week. It’s the regularity that’s important, not the intensity.
