Vision without execution

Hell is paved with good intentions.

There are many surveys about the percentage of new year’s resolutions which fails. The exact number varies from one survey to another, but overall, it’s not good. Most new year’s resolutions are not achieved.

Why? I think because most people focus only on a goal orientated approach and not enough on a process orientated approach/ In other words, quoting Thomas Edison: Vision without execution is hallucination.

Bonjour, in this video, I want to share a simple process and elaborate on what we did last week regarding “We Dream of 2023” and apply it on a day-to-day basis.

I’m now in in the French Pyrenees, and we’ve just spent three days with an amazing group of people who are very close friends. We have gathered together in this little mountain refuge in front of a frozen lake.

We had an amazing day yesterday which started with a walk. Some of us skied and the rest of us did a hike with snowshoes on and the scenery was spectacular. When we got back to the refuge, we decided to do a session about my life in 2023. It was wonderful to see a mix of young and middle-aged people take out a pen a paper and write down their dreams and what they wanted out of 2023.

At the end of the session, one my good friends Rosa asked a great question “Now that I have my dream for 2023, what do I do next?”. I very quickly explained a process which is basically think quarterly, plan weekly and act daily. What does this mean?

I suggest that every quarter you choose three personal priorities, I call them my personal big rocks. You look at what you have written down for ‘my life in 2023’ and ask yourself: “what are the three things from this plan that if I focus on this quarter would have the biggest impact long term of my life?”.

Simple question but so powerful.

For example, when I did this exercise in 2022, TK and I dreamt about being with Cameron at Christmas and having time with all those friends together. To make this happen I did a compass plan where I chose three big rocks which included this trip in December/January.

Step 1: think quarterly.

The next step is a very important one. It is to plan weekly. Every week you look at this plan and ask yourself this critical question: “What do I need to do next week to progress on my big rock?”.

Every week I would look at this dream of doing this trip and every week I would organize a few next steps, block it in my calendar so I can focus on it daily.

The truth is, I did have some help from two special people in organizing this trip. One of them is my beautiful wife, Tk. She booked all the plane tickets and organize all the accommodation. The other person is my very good friend Pol.

Paul is a master organizer who definitely played an integral part in getting all our friends together in this magical place. Not an easy feat considering these 22 friends come from all around the world. The mountain guide couldn’t believe how many languages were being spoken between us.

So, thanks to these two people I was able to fulfill my personal big rocks for last year……this video should be a video about delegation, but that’s going to be for another time.

We all said that end of this year we would like to come together again and check how we have got on in 2023 with focusing on our personal big rocks. That will definitely be on the list for my dream 2023.

This is this week’s Work Smarter: Live Better tip.

A bientôt,
Cyril
