Training leaders on a remote island

Today, I’m in a beautiful part of Fiji. It’s about 5:30 PM, and the sun has just slipped below the horizon, painting the sky in incredible shades of orange and pink. In exactly an hour and a half, I’ll be jumping online to train a group of corporate leaders based over in Europe.

In this video, I want to take you behind the scenes and show you the exact mobile equipment I use to run high-stakes meetings and training sessions while traveling.

TK is right here relaxing on the lounge, the sound of the ocean is drifting through the windows, and the setting is just spectacular. And in an hour and a half, I have this training. But this isn’t just a quick, casual phone call. This is a full-on, intensive two-hour leadership training session. To make it seamless, I need the right setup.

I don’t like to gamble with hotel or Airbnb internet connections when my clients are on the line. So, I took out a global subscription to Starlink. I have the dish set up right outside on the grass, and I run a physical ethernet cable directly from it straight into my computer. It gives me a rock-solid, high-speed connection anywhere in the world.

Inside the room, my portable “office” takes about five minutes to set up on a simple table:

  • Dual screens: I use my main laptop alongside a portable spare screen. When I train, my slides sit on one side, and I can see the faces of all my participants clearly on the other.
  • Eye-level camera: I raise my laptop up slightly on a few books or a small stand. This ensures the external webcam sits exactly at my eye level, which feels much more natural and engaging for the audience.
  • Simple audio: I plug in a standard pair of AirPods. They are lightweight, reliable, and keep the audio crisp.

In about an hour, I’ll trade my relaxed holiday shorts for a sharp button-down shirt so I look the part. Thanks to this simple kit, the video will be sharp, the audio clear, and the entire session will be completely seamless.

Setting up this workspace made me pause and reflect. I feel an overwhelming sense of gratitude to be able to do a job that I love. Honestly, I often wonder if I should even call it a “job”, with people I truly respect, all while sitting in an incredible environment like this. Modern technology has given us an extraordinary amount of freedom if we know how to use it.

It doesn’t take a massive budget or a complicated IT team to build a professional mobile setup. With a few deliberate choices, you can effectively run your business, lead your team, and show up at your absolute best from literally anywhere on the planet.

This is this week’s Work Smarter, Live Better tip.

You have a lovely day.

À bientôt,
Cyril
